Encinitas business life
Encinitas grew up around flower growers. Flower breeding and growing has been a major industry here since the early 1900s, and the city was long known as the Flower Capital of the World. Many nurseries have closed to make room for housing, but growers and garden centers remain part of the local economy.
Today most Encinitas businesses are small and close to the coast. The city works with four business groups: Cardiff 101, Encinitas 101, Leucadia 101 and the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce. Along Highway 101 you find surf shops, cafes, boutiques, yoga and wellness studios, galleries and restaurants. Up the hill, consultants, designers, therapists and real estate agents work from home offices.
What Encinitas books often need
- Plant and product inventory counted before and after the busy season
- Wholesale sales to landscapers and retailers kept apart from taxable retail sales
- Seasonal payroll for extra staff in spring or summer
- Studio memberships and workshop fees recorded in the month they are earned
- Home office and vehicle costs documented for solo professionals
- Owner draws and personal spending moved out of business expenses
- Short-term rental income tracked by property for owners who host visitors
What Encinitas owners ask us for
- Bookkeeping cleanup: Growers and garden centers that expensed every pot and flat need a slow-season count posted as inventory. Cleanup also splits wholesale sales to landscapers from taxable retail.
- Short-term rental bookkeeping: Owners hosting coastal visitors need rental income and costs tracked by property, apart from any other work they do.
- Small business bookkeeping: Consultants, designers, therapists and agents working from home offices up the hill need home office and vehicle costs documented and personal spending pulled out.
Encinitas Business Registration
Encinitas does not run a business license program. It uses a Business Registration instead. Any person or company doing business in the city must register, whether or not the business is based in Encinitas.
Applications and renewals run through the city's online Customer Self Service portal. After approval you print the Business Registration Certificate from your dashboard, and the city requires it to be displayed in a visible spot at the business. Renewal notices appear in the portal each year and can be paid online. Nonprofits pay the processing and renewal fees too, and a small state-mandated fee is added to each new registration and renewal.
In the books, the registration fee belongs in licenses and permits, with the renewal date noted so it does not lapse.
Fees and procedures change. Check the City of Encinitas Development Services or permits office for current details.
A typical Encinitas cleanup
A family nursery sells plants to landscapers on account and to the public at its retail yard. Every pot, bag of soil and flat of seedlings was expensed when bought. Landscaper invoices were written by hand and only entered when paid. Sales tax was charged at the register but never checked against the returns.
The cleanup starts with an inventory count in the slow season. That count becomes the opening inventory balance. Open landscaper invoices are entered so accounts receivable shows who still owes money. Retail and wholesale sales go to separate accounts, and resale certificates are collected for the wholesale side. The owner can now see which side of the business earns more, and the sales tax returns match the books.
